Optimized charging of e-cars

Table of contents

Would you like to operate your electric car primarily with PV power and avoid grid power? Depending on your daily schedule, you can conveniently define the optimal charging behavior for your electric car via the SOLARWATT Manager portal. You can set the optimized charging behavior in the Energy optimization area.

    PV-optimized

PV-optimized uses the proportion of PV generation that is not required directly or for charging a battery storage system. The wallbox is automatically activated by the Manager as soon as the available excess PV power corresponds to the Threshold you have defined for the start of charging. The threshold for the start of charging should be 1.4 kW (minimum charging power, single-phase) or 4.2 kW (minimum charging power, three-phase) in order to charge with 100% excess PV power. If the entered threshold for the start of charging is below the minimum charging power of your electric car, the difference is compensated with battery or grid power.

In addition to the Threshold , you can also set the maximum charging power, a minimum duration and a minimum rest time.

You can start the charging process for your electric car manually at any time using the Charge now button.

    Time-based

The wallbox is switched at fixed times regardless of an existing surplus of solar power. The vehicle is charged with the maximum charging power from all available energy sources (PV surplus, battery and grid power). You define the switching times using the time bars.

You can start the charging process for your electric car manually at any time using the Charge now button.

    Currently not optimized

If your wallbox is neither PV-optimized nor time-based controlled, you can switch it ON / OFF manually. Your electric car will then be charged with the specified maximum charging power, regardless of whether sufficient PV power is available.

    Explanation

If the VW ID.3 (charges 3-phase) is to be charged with 100% PV surplus, you must set the Threshold for the start of charging to 4.2 kW (minimum charging power). If you enter a lower threshold value, the power difference between the PV power generated and the minimum charging power of the electric car is compensated by drawing power from the battery storage system or the public grid.

Minimum runtime 120 min means that the wallbox is always activated for at least 120 minutes. If the PV surplus Threshold is not reached in the meantime, the car is charged with grid or battery power. Setting the Minimum rest time to 0 min allows the wallbox to be restarted at any time.

    Minimum charging current

Some electric cars (e.g. Renault ZOE) are designed for high charging power (22 kW).

This means that at low charging currents, the electric car does not lose any charging power.

In this case, you must adjust the minimum charging current.
You can set the minimum charging current for the Manager pro in combination with a Keba or Webasto live wallbox in the Devices section of the Manager portal.

For the Manager flex, an Alfen or Webasto Next wallbox, please contact our customer service to arrange for the minimum charging current to be set.
